Overall Description
THUYẾT MINH TỔNG QUAN
---
(the overall description from Vo Trong Nghia Architects design firm)
A residential resort, named Flamingo Dailai Resort, was planned and partly constructed for busy city citizens to enjoy their weekends surrounded by nature. It is located in the middle of flourishing forests between Dai Lai Lake and surrounding mountains, about 50 km away Hanoi. The guests of this resort can enjoy the beautiful landscape inlayed with numerous natural objects, plants and flowers and escape their daily life in cramped quarters.
--------

The lot of Dai Lai Conference Hall is located beside the main access road, which is used as an entrance for the whole resort; the building welcomes all visitors when they come. To enhance their expectation for a delightful stay in the resort, an impressive curved stone wall along the road was designed as the reception for the area. This wall, which is 80 meters long, 8.2 meters high and has the thickest parts of 1 meter at its two wings, offers a sequential view to visitors, revealing and screening the surrounding nature place to place. An orthogonal access between backfilled hills conducts visitors through the stone wall, then, they reach a foyer covered by a dynamic bamboo structure with an extraordinary scale. The wide-span structure of the conference hall consists of the composition of straight bamboos.
Bamboo itself has many advantages, such as beautiful color, texture and reproduction potential. Many bamboos are assembled into a structural frame, which has higher reliability and redundancy than bamboo used individually. Its maximum span is 15 meters and the positions of the joints at each frame are adjusted to make a generous curve of the roof. Though the functional requirements as a conference center divide the space into specific rooms such as a main hall, sub hall, foyer and supporting rooms, the dynamic bamboo structure enables visitors to feel the spaces are wider and more open, showing its continuity through a transom window above the partitions.
Bamboo and stone are abundant natural resources near the area. The hall achieves its originality and special atmosphere by using these local materials in plenty. Consequently, the building becomes a friendly accompaniment to nature. The aim of this building is not only to supply a nice space for events but also to deepen the experience of the generous spirit of nature.

BAMBOO TRE
--
On the task of bamboo, this time the office has applied another species of bamboo for some projects, which named in Vietnamese as Luong, grows well in the North Vietnam. People in our office often call “straight bamboo” to distinguish this tree from Tam Vong - the “bending bamboo” because Tam Vong which grows well in the South, can be bent to be big arcs; however Luong - the “straight bamboo”, almost can not be. (the presentation of the Naman Conference Hall project describes more the properties of Tam Vong). Luong has its own advantages with bigger and longer trunk. In regard to the ability to be able to provide for the harvest, the diameter of the tree trunk is mostly the key information. For Luong, even though this species can grow to be very big in several lands with the trunk diameter is up to 200mm, people in the North Vietnam almost sell and buy trees that have the diameter of approximately 100mm, whereas they just can obtain the Tam Vong trunk which has a maximum diameter of 55mm for construction. The body of Luong tree can join to construct important structural elements such as column or beam, but the inner diameter of the hole is also quite big; that is why it is impossible to bend the trunk much and also they are easy to be cracked if without well-calculated arrangement.
After receiving the schemas, we have worked again on each truss, one by one, in drawings, on small-cale models as well as at the construction site, because adjusting one truss means adjusting all of the rest, nearly so. Each truss must stand stably on two abutments of two opposite walls, curved one and straight one; and for the biggest truss, maximum distance from an intersection to another intersection next to, must be confirmed to be fine, otherwise bamboos would be passively bent over and broken. Accordingly, to assure that the decision on the composition of the truss is true, in first steps of the construction there were three real 1:1 scale models were made, then the best prototype was chosen. STONE ĐÁ
----------------
-----
Except for the roof structural system made of bamboo frames and leaves, walls and floors are all finished with natural stone slabs, which are a rich resource of the region or neighboring provinces, of course we should only exploit them in specific contexts without abuse. Here we only present the wall finishing stone, which contributes to the main idea of the project. In essence, they are all limestone, widely distributed in the North of Vietnam, and people in the construction industry call them "blue stone", more accurately they are "light blue stone". These light blue stones are divided into two main types in construction, rough and square. It can be clearly seen that the rough stones that make up the outer layer of wall of the 80m curved wall, creating a certain impression on visitors. The square type fills the inner layer of the big curved wall and also straight walls. It should be further noted that the square stone comes in two different thicknesses - for the exterior back wall and two gable walls, along with the interior walls in the auxiliary areas, they are covered with flat and thin stone, just like the traditional way. However, wall surfaces inside the halls and those in the lobby space where people usualy communicate, needed a different finishing, how to reduce the echo; so thicker stones were ordered that each one is 50mm thick, stacked together and against the core walls, creating full of small holes interleavedly.
We all know that there are many nice buildings made from stones in the world in the past and today but this work is deserved to be appreciated in Vietnam that time. The architects have tried on the design work in office, and came to the construction site in necessary days. The client’s team and the construction teams have also contributed very well in their ways. The image of stone construction next to is a true example for this endeavour; to complete well these stacked-stone walls, the vertical and horizontal lines were checked carefully, some parts of walls were built wrong so the clients and us organized a meeting, then we agreed to remove those and build again, in order to achieve the satisfactory result.
